Book Summary. Act 1 Scene 1. King Lear’s Palace. The play starts with the Earl Shakespeares King Lear book Kent, the Earl of Gloucester, and his bastard son, Edmund. The two earls are talking and Kent asks Gloucester to introduce his son.

Gloucester says that even though he is a bastard, he still loves him. Next enters King Lear, the Duke of Cornwall, and the Duke King Lear is a tragedy by William Shakespeare. The title character descends into madness after disposing of his estate between two of his three daughters based on their flattery, bringing tragic consequences for all.
